The Smokey Joe award recognises individuals who have given outstanding service to the Council of Legal Education and/or the Eugene Dupuch Law School.
The name is derived from a weekly political and social commentary Smokey Joe Says, written by the Hon. Eugene Dupuch Q.C. and published on radio and in the newspaper. The award itself is designed by Bahamian fine artist and ceramicist, Jessica Colebrook.
The 2020 Smokey Joe awardee is Mr. Thomas Evans Q.C.
Mr. Evans, a proud son of Nicholl’s Town Andros, is a nation builder – A significant amount of his prodigious service has been though the vehicle of the law. He received his LLB from the University of the West Indies. He is a member of the 2nd class of the Council of Legal Education Norman Manley Law School graduating with the Legal Education Certificate in 1976. He was admitted to The Bahamas Bar that same year.
Mr. Evans has had almost 45 years of legal practice, including stints on the judiciary. For half of that time, he has been associated with the Eugene Dupuch Law School where his service and contribution have been exemplary and edifying. We will miss Mr. Evans’ wisdom and experience but are honoured to have received his generosity of knowledge and spirit for more than 20 years.
