Dian Saunders photoDian Saunders-Adderley, Civil Engineer and second year student at the Eugene Dupuch Law School was recently named a Fellow of the United Kingdom Institute of Civil Engineers.  Fellowship, the highest recognition of this professional society is awarded to persons with proven expertise in the field.

“I encourage Bahamian professionals to seek internationally recognized credentials in their field so that we can compete in the international arena,” she said. “Seek opportunities, work in a variety of industries, and be willing to move within your organization.”

Dian believes in life-long learning, and the study of law is part of her current, self-imposed, five year plan. While employed at the Water and Sewerage Corporation, Dian pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree through distance learning with the University of London. “Sound contracts are important components of successful engineering projects. They require legal expertise in order to identify potential problems and reduce opportunities for dispute. As an engineer and law student, I am able to put right away, what I am learning into practice.”

“Law impacts all aspects of society. The Law School embraces Dian’s vision for enhancing her engineering practice by bringing legal skills to the table,” remarks Tonya Bastian-Galanis, Law School Principal. “We congratulate Dian on her achievements.”

“One thing you cannot take away from a person is education” Dian says, as she recalls the words of her mother’s mentor Mable Walker, ‘Ma’ as she was affectionately called. “I believe that no matter how small, something should change you every day.”

“Mentorship is key to success.” She embraces opportunities to support students and interns ever mindful of others who have invested in her. “George Cox, a highly respected engineer took the time to mentor me, a then 10th grade student. An experience that helped to shape me into who I am today.”

As a mother of two, she admits that life is a balancing act. The lists posted in her office help to keep her organized and on track. She enjoys classes with the younger, more traditional students and encourages them to embrace career growth opportunities so that they think more holistically and outside of the box. Dian is an inspiration to us all.
