The word Imoja or Umoja is a Swahili word meaning Unity. By presenting Imoja lectures/panel discussions, the Eugene Dupuch Law School demonstrates a coming together or unity of the Law School and the community to address legal issues that concern persons in society. Imoja lectures also provide educational opportunities for the public on the law and the legal rights of individuals.
The presentation of Imoja lectures accords with the Law School’s mission to foster excellence in Legal education, and its motto of ‘commitment to social service’.
Past Imoja lectures have focused on issues such as “National Sovereignty Diplomacy and Community Relations in the Post September 11, 2001 Socio-Political Environment”, “From Quieting Titles to Registered Land”, “Proposed Legislation Affecting Generation Property’’, “Human Trafficking in the 21st Century” and “ Immigration Communities in Crisis, Human Rights & Social Justice”.
Some of the Imoja Lectures have been presented in Association with other corporate citizens such as The Bahamas Bar Association, The Bahamas Human Rights Network, and the University of The Bahamas.
