EDLS LEGAL EDUCATION WEEK 2016

LEW Fun Day
LEW Fun Day

Last month the EDLS Students’ Association brought the EDLS community together to celebrate Legal Education Week (LEW). Under the theme ‘Extending the Legal Legacy’, staff and students participated in activities that generated camaraderie and developed the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are key to success in the legal profession. Legal Education week is an annual event of the EDLS Students’ Association.

The week kicked off with a weekend of fun and fellowship. We congratulate team Excelsior, winners of the Race Judicata and the Fun Fitness Day, they fought well, earning the coveted EDLS NINJA WARRIOR Title!   On Sunday, faculty, staff and students worshipped at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral which was followed by a luncheon at the Mosaic Restaurant.

On Monday February 1st the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Sen. The Hon. Allyson Maynard Gibson Q.C.  officially opened LEW 2016 with an interview style session, #AsktheAG, moderated by Year 1 student representative Berchel Wilson. The full interview which focuses on the Swift Justice Initiative to improve the efficiency in the administration of justice in The Bahamas is available at this link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPAAkBJ2YfY&feature=youtu.be

LEW 2016, spearheaded by Destiny McKinney, EDLSSA VP, and Legal Education Week Chair, was an eventful and rewarding experience for all. “The objective of the week is to foster and promote legal education and to increase awareness of legal issues in the community. To this end, my committee planned a range of activities to encourage collaboration,” she said.

The week’s events also included a conflict resolution seminar for C.C. Sweeting Senior High School students, Lunch and Learn, Game Day and the annual Imoja lecture hosted by the EDLS Legal Aid Clinic. The Imoja lecture provides a forum for the public to hear and participate in discussions on current legal issues impacting the community and individuals in society.  This year’s lecture and panel discussion focused on ‘Statelessness and its Impact on the Children of Migrants in The Bahamas.’  We are thankful for the support of our panelists Ms. Deneisha Moss Balboni, Assistant Protection Officer, Caribbean Unit, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; Ms. Marion Bethel, Attorney and Human Rights Advocate and Dr. Ian Strachan, Professor of English, The College of The Bahamas.

At the Lunch and Learn held at Choices Restaurant, Director of the National Insurance Board Ms. Rowena Bethel gave a relevant and timely presentation on ‘The Law and the Web: An assessment of the law’s relevance and response to internet usage and technology.’

The week culminated with ‘Dis We Bar’ our annual theatrical production featuring the talents of our students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends. This year’s play, ‘Straight Outta Law School’ satirized some of the challenges that attorneys meet in their legal careers.

Legal Education Week is one of the highlights of our academic year. The support of the school community is instrumental to its success. Thank you EDLSSA and teams Denning’s Angels, Cerasee, Excelsior and Jabroni for a worthwhile and fun-filled week!
