Address by Dame Anita Allen, DBE – Orientation Week 2023

Former President of the Court of Appeal of The Bahamas, Dame Anita Allen, DBE, delivered the keynote address to students of the Eugene Dupuch Law School on September 20, 2023, during the Law School’s orientation week activities. In her speech entitled “Is the Law a Jealous Mistress – or Partner?”, Dame Anita invited the lawyers in training to view the law as an empowering partner that provides a platform from which they can make a difference in the lives of others and bring about positive and meaningful societal changes. Dame Anita noted that although the demands of the profession are many, jurists should engage in other pursuits to balance their professional and personal lives. “As good lawyers,” she encouraged, “you should nevertheless seek to develop a wider comprehension of different topics, whether it be music, poetry, philosophy, economics, history, civics, or other topics which add to your understanding of the law.” To read the full address click here.
