7th Annual Eugene Dupuch Distinguished Lecture

The Law School was privileged to hear from the Hon. Mr. Justice Conteh, Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of The Bahamas on the occasion of the 7th annual Eugene Dupuch Distinguished lecture. The lecture was hosted by the Eugene Dupuch Law School, Dupuch & Turnquest & Co. Chambers and the Environmental Law Clinic, a collaborative Clinic of the Eugene Dupuch Law School, the College of The Bahamas LLB Programme, and Pace University.

Justice Conteh, gave an important, in-depth and incisive address on the environment and litigation.  Justice Conteh, who formerly served as Chief Justice of the Commonwealth Caribbean State of Belize, and on the Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands, has delivered several important judgments relating to environmental law.   Entitled, ‘The Environment and Litigation: Reflections on some Judicial Responses”, this lecture examined several judicial decisions on the environment and explored the supporting legislative context.

“The need to protect the environment is today unarguable, or at least, should be so… For the archipelagic nation state of The Bahamas, with water everywhere and not a mountain in sight or a hinterland to speak of, this may well present an existentialist threat…[A]n astute appreciation of litigation involving the environment will show that, at the end of the day, it really is about the affirmation of the rule of law…”
