EUGENE DUPUCH LAW SCHOOL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS!

The Eugene Dupuch Law School, established in The Bahamas in 1998, is celebrating 20 years of excellence in legal education and its commitment to social service. Opening its doors in September of 1998, the Eugene Dupuch Law School (EDLS) became the third of three Law Schools operated by the Council of Legal Education in the Commonwealth Caribbean where students can obtain post graduate legal education, before being admitted to the Bars of various Caribbean countries.

While EDLS began with a student complement of 28 and the support of a small number of dedicated faculty and staff committed to the success of the institution at premises in Oakes Field, the Law School, which recently relocated to the City Corporate Centre, Rosetta Street, Palmdale, has over the past 20 years matriculated more than 450 students who are now practicing lawyers across the Commonwealth Caribbean and the globe.

To commemorate its 20th anniversary, the Law School has planned a series of events which include:

  1. The Eugene Dupuch Distinguished Lecture. The Law School, in conjunction with Dupuch and Turnquest, Counsel and Attorneys-at-Law, will host the Eugene Dupuch Distinguished Lecture. The lecture provides a forum for the scholarly discussion of topical matters that are of interest to the legal profession and civil society.  The 2019 distinguished lecture will be presented by the Honourable Mr. Justice C. Dennis Morrison, President of the Court of Appeal of Jamaica and former Chairman of the Council of Legal Education. The Eugene Dupuch Distinguished Lecture will be held on Thursday February 21, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel in Nassau. The lecture is open to the public and is free of charge.
  2. Gala Dinner. A Gala Dinner, to be held on Friday February 22, 2019 at the Crown Ballroom, Atlantis, Paradise Island. Tickets are $150. Proceeds raised will help to fund programmes of the Eugene Dupuch Law School Legal Aid Clinic.
  3. Legal Aid Fair.  The Eugene Dupuch Law School Legal Aid Clinic will host a free community legal aid clinic on Saturday February 23, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Law School, City Corporate Center, Rosetta Street.  This community event will be supported by EDLS staff, alumni and students who will provide free legal advice to the public on a range of topics including employment, wills, landlord and tenant and divorce and division of assets.  Members of the public are encouraged to make an appointment in advance by telephoning 322-5943/4.
  4. Church Service. The Law School will end its week of activities with a service of thanksgiving at Evangelistic Temple, 4th Terrace Centreville, Collins Avenue at 11:00 a.m.

Principal of the Law School, Mrs. Tonya Bastian Galanis, stated that the Law School is extremely proud of the contributions that it has made to The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean region over the past twenty years and looks forward to celebrating its achievements with all its stakeholders.
