Celebrating 40 Years of the Council of Legal Education

The Council of Legal Education marked its 40th anniversary on Friday, September 2, 2011 with a Gala Dinner at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, St. Kitts. On that occassion, the Council  honoured the chairmen of the Council.  Special awards were extended to Lady Beverly Walrond Q.C. who has been a member of the Council since 1994; and Mrs. Kathleen Rochford (deceased) who was Registrar of the Hugh Wooding Law School  1987 to 2011.

The Eugene Dupuch Law School also held a number of 40th anniversary commemorative including a special Distinguished Lecture delivered by Mr. Thomas Evans Q.C. on the topic “The Law and Social Change: A Look at Legal Reform in The Bahamas”, and a lecture by, Sir Burton Hall, Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. Justice Hall addressed the Eugene Dupuch Law School students on “A way forward in Criminal Justice for the Bahamas: a Perspective from Abroad.”  

The Law School also hosted the members of the Council of Legal Education who were visiting for the Academic Committee Meeting to a Goombay Fete in celebration of the the 40th Anniversary of the Council of Legal Education; at the Goombay Fete, members who have contributed significantly, to Legal Education in the region were awarded the ‘Smokey Joe Award” awarded by the Eugene Dupuch Law School. Among the honourees were, Sir Oriville Turnquest, GCMG, QC, JP, LL.B and former Governor General of The Bahamas, The Hon. Ms. Justice Rhonda Bain, Justice of the Supreme Court of The Bahamas, The Hon. Mr. Sr.Justice Jon Issacs, Justice of the Supreme Court of The Bahamas, Sir Burton Hall,  Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, Mr. Justice Austin L. Davis, former Principal of the Eugene Dupuch Law School and  Mrs. Hazel Thompson-Ahye, Senior Tutor at the Eugene Dupuch Law School.
